I think we would all agree that a noisy faucet is one of the most annoying sounds in any home. A faucet is supposed to run smoothly and make a quiet soothing sound. However, there are times when anything but soothing sounds are coming from your faucet. Screeching, loud banging, hammering and spitting type sounds are common annoyances from many faucets and sounds we would all like to avoid. Here at Steve Mull Plumbing we want to help our clients understand what causes these annoying sounds and what can be done to resolve them once and for all.
THE SOURCE OF THOSE ANNOYING FAUCET SOUNDS
If you are hearing a high-pitched squealing or screeching sound coming from your faucet this is more than likely being caused by the rubber washers on the inside of the faucet. These washers will emit annoying sounds when they become hardened and are no longer flexible as a result of wear and tear and aging. To resolve this noisy faucet sound, simply replace the rubber washer. This is a simple task, but if you are not comfortable to perform this task, be sure to reach out to the team here at Steve Mull Plumbing. We’ll take care of it for you.
If it’s a coughing or spitting type noise you are hearing it is probably because there is an inconsistent water stream coming out of the faucet. If the aerator screen that is located in the faucet’s mouth becomes clogged with various mineral deposits the flow of water will be disrupted. When the smooth flow is disrupted, spurting, coughing and spitting sounds are created. To resolve this issue, remove the aerator with a screwdriver and either soak it for a bit in vinegar or go out and purchase a new one. This is a rather simple task as well, but, again, if you are not handy with plumbing tools, trust the team here at Steve Mull Plumbing. We have got you covered.
Finally, if you are noticing a rattling, knocking or hammering sound coming from the faucet when you shut it off, this is because the flow of water is being suddenly turned off. When this occurs the water pipe itself begins to rattle and causes the hammering sound you hear. To resolve this problem, it is best to contact one of our qualified plumbers. We will need to install specialized arrestors that will take away the knocking sound from your pipes. Our skilled plumbers will also check the water pressure in your house and make any adjustments to the regulator that may be needed.
