As homeowners, we are all faced with endless challenges and problems that arise every day. From electrical issues and leaking pipes to faulty appliances and even broken garage doors, the problems are endless. With that said, there is one common problem that tends to haunt every homeowner and that is running out of hot water.
Here at Steve Mull Plumbing we want to share some insight with our valued clients on some common reasons why you keep running out of hot water and what you can do to resolve it.
Common Reasons Why the Hot Water Is Out Again
The team here at Steve Mull Plumbing fully understands how important it is to have a fully functioning plumbing system in your home. We recognize the significant role that hot water plays in every home. When there is no hot water available at any one time in your home, there are usually a couple of common reasons why this occurs.
- Several Electrical Items and Appliances Are Running at the Same Time – One of the most common reasons why homeowners will run out of hot water is because they are running a number of appliances that use the hot water at the same time. Perhaps you have just finished dinner and the dishwasher is running, while a load of laundry is washing and a family member is showering or bathing. Should this occur, chances are there will not be enough hot water at the exact same time to accommodate all the needs of each of these appliances. With that said, sure enough the hot water is apt to run out. To resolve this issue be mindful of what appliances or systems are running at the same time and put an appropriate running schedule in place.
- A Malfunctioning Thermostat – There are times when the thermostat on a hot water heater is not working properly. The thermostat serves to provide the accurate temperature of the water. However, if it is not working properly, it may register that the water has been fully heated, when in essence it is much cooler than the displayed temperature. When this occurs, try resetting the thermostat. If you find that this does not work, it will be necessary to purchase a new thermostat for your hot water heater.
- Sediment in the Hot Water Heater is Never a Good Thing – Finally, there is one other primary reason why your water is not heating up properly and that would be the presence of a sediment buildup. If there is a large amount of sediment that has developed within the water heater, it will typically settle at the bottom of the tank. When this occurs, it keeps the water from coming in contact with the heating element thereby causing the water to be much cooler than the typical hot temperature. If you own an older type water heater, this tends to be the culprit when you find yourself out of hot water because the sediment has had many more years to build up and settle. If this scenario sounds familiar, reach out to one of our professionals and schedule a water heater inspection and cleaning.
